Hong Kong

The city where school choice, capital instruments and club life intersect most closely.

Calendar

Most international schools open applications in September and October for entry the following August, with assessments from November to February. Rolling admission exists for some grades; strong schools fill Reception and Year 7 earliest.

What to know

  • Language profile matters: bilingual programmes (CIS, ISF, VSA) assess Chinese as well as English.
  • Debentures, capital notes and nomination rights affect priority at several schools; AJPE keeps the capital decision separate from the school recommendation.
  • Sibling, alumni and corporate priorities differ school by school; ask for the written policy.
  • Local elite schools follow a different calendar and a Primary One allocation system that interacts with private admissions.

Sport and the portfolio

Rugby, hockey, cricket, sailing, swimming and tennis through member clubs; dinghy sailing certificates through RYA and HKSF centres.
