Calendar
Applications generally open in the autumn for August entry, with assessments from December to March; waitlists are common at early-years and middle-school entry points.
What to know
- Capacity is tight at the long-established schools; apply to several and start early.
- Entrance fees, building funds and facility fees are substantial and mostly non-refundable; there is no secondary market.
- Residence status for the child and parents must be in place; school enrolment itself does not confer status.
- Japanese-language expectations differ: some schools are English-medium with Japanese as a subject, others are bilingual.
Sport and the portfolio
Skiing at Niseko and Hakuba within reach for winter programmes; baseball, soccer, swimming and kendo through school and community clubs.
