Ski instructor pathways: Niseko, Hakuba and New Zealand

Two to four weeks on snow, finishing with a recognised instructor or race qualification, in Japan over the winter holidays or in New Zealand during the Northern summer.

What the programme is

Accredited snowsports schools in Niseko (Hokkaido) and Hakuba (Nagano) run instructor training courses each winter under the New Zealand (NZSIA), Canadian (CSIA) and British (BASI) systems, typically a two-week Level 1 course ending in an examination. In New Zealand, the same qualifications are offered at Cardrona, Treble Cone, Coronet Peak and Mt Hutt from June to September. Minimum ages for certification are generally 15 or 16 depending on the system; younger children join race and freestyle development camps that lead into certification later.

Why it matters for admissions

A Level 1 instructor qualification is a verifiable credential that shows sustained skill, responsibility for others and the ability to pass an external assessment. For boarding and U.S. day schools it reads as leadership and service; for Hong Kong and Singapore schools it distinguishes a profile in a city without snow.

How AJPE arranges it

We select the school and course for the child's level, arrange supervised accommodation and transfers, book the examination, add Japanese-language or outdoor components where wanted, and document the experience in the activity portfolio that supports the application. Course fees, lift passes, accommodation and travel are third-party costs paid at cost.

Timing

Japan: late December to early March, with the Hong Kong and Singapore winter breaks and Chinese New Year the most practical windows. New Zealand: July and August, matching Northern-hemisphere summer holidays.
